Always Kinky: Curly Twist Out

This style is definately a go to style without using heat. I made a You-Tube about how to style heat damaged  to hide the straighties. Check it out!.
Step 1. Co Wash with Hello Hydration (leave a little in to detangle)
Step 2. Let the hair dry 90%
Step 3. Seperate the hair to 5 sections
Step 4. Two strand twist and curl with "flexi-rod" type curler
Step 5. Set until dry (over night)
Step 6. Take out and finger lift to your liking (the bigger the better)

Always Kinky: Hair Typing

Giving your hair a grade? I have been reading about the system on hair typing and I feel the need to weigh in on this issue. I have mixed feelings about this particular issue. On one end I feel like it can be useful in social/beauty networking where you don’t really get to compare hair for styling purposes. For example I see a style I like and think I may be able to rock it but I am not so sure if my curls would work. I guess this particular time would be fine to ask “What is your hair type?” On the other hand I feel like black women especially get so caught up in comparing and feeling inferior when it comes to hair sometimes I feel it may be best just to let each person figure it out themselves. Even in my experience as a life-long #naturalhair chick, my hair has gone thorough changes and if I did not know my hair, it would have been difficult to make the necessary adjustments. If you would like to know more about hair typing check it out. By the way I think I am 3C and 4A. In case you cared *smiles*

Always Kinky: Creme Moisturizer

I have been using this product in my hair for the last week. I must say while the Jheri Alert was sounding, I ignored the feeling and bought it anyway. I am happy that I did! I used it as a moisturizer for my blow out and avoided all chances of Jheri Madness. It kept my hair smooth and sleek after setting my curls with flexirods. This is a product that I would use over and over again. *cheers* I hope to see you all at the #naturalhair chat on Twitter Sunday night at 10pm!

Always Kinky: The Curly Blow Out

I have decided to take a break from the Ceramic Treatment and just stick to blow drying for now for fear of further damaging my hair. I did this look in hopes that I create the Big Hair that I have always dreamed of.
Step 1: Co-wash and detangle with conditioner of choice and Denman.
Step 2: Add a little more condtioner to protect from the heat and separate the hair in 4 twists.
Step 3: Blow dry in sections.
Step 4: Add Cream Oil moisturizer
Step 5: Roll with Flexirods

Step 6: Finger Fluff to your liking (pull fingers all the way through for "afro-like" result)

Always Kinky: Shea What?

Is it me or is shea butter over rated? I have used it but the results have been just OK. Now that it is winter I am looking for a deep moisturizer to tame these tresses. Shea butter is an option but not the end all for me that is. Personally I like to use regular conditioner like Hello Hydration because shea butter is still to greasy for my liking. I am looking into combining Shea with other products because I like all of the protection it can provide but I do not live and die by it.

Always Kinky: Never the Jheri

As I wade through many different seasons that produce different hair textures I accidentally ventured to the place one should never go. I co-washed my hair with the usual Herbal Essence Hello Hydration and proceded to detangle and twist out. I applied the Olive Oil Leave in Moisturizer then I blew it dry, no brush, because I was pressed for time. I only dried it 80% as always. A 5 piece Twist-Out curled with Flexi Rods like I do often.......When I woke up and took the set out.....Uhhhh who ordered the Jheri Curl? My hair was completely dry but it hung and the curls were very relaxed. I enjoyed how the hair moved but it was greasy and very Wave Nuvouish. I retraced my steps and it all comes down to the Olive Oil Leave in Moisturizer. My hair was not used to this unless it was being Ceremically Treated so I guess it protested. This has been a lesson learned. I am not saying that  this product is bad, #imjustsayin I used it for the wrong purpose.

Always Kinky: Ceramic Treatment

I am all for freedom of choice. I know many of us #naturalhair sisters are known to be of the militant brand, and I do "Fight the Power" on certain topics, what we do with our hair is just not my platform. I am proud of my natural hair and I love the bond that it creates amongst women. This is all well explained in my Hair Journey video. There are times when I feel the need for a change. This is when I add the "Ceramic Treatment". I have flat ironed my hair 3 times since I became Unlock'd and have not had any heat damage.  I believe it can be accredited to the quality of the product. I use the Jilbere Tourmaline Flat Iron and a good blowdryer. Some may argue that using both forms of heat is bad for the hair. I have found that if I blow dry first, I use a much lower setting with the flat iron.  An awesome thing about this Iron is that there are 40 different settings and the iron adjusts quickly to the setting. Also once I flat iron, I do not put anymore heat on my hair. I use foam rollers or bantu knots to add body. So until nextime.....Keep it Kinky or Not!

Always Kinky: Co-Washing: Hello Hydration

It is hard to imagine my life before I became hip to the Co-washing phenomenon. Before I loc'd my hair (5 years ago) I rarely washed my hair because I would wear tiny twists for a couple of weeks and didnt want to mess them up prematurely *covers my face*. Since I took my locs out (5 months ago) I have been co-washing my hair at least every 4 days. I LOVE it! I do not Detangle my hair that often but my hair is responding to my attention very gracefully. I am currently using Hello Hydration by Herbal Essence and I love the smell! I leaves my hair well moisturized. I have heard pro and cons to this particular product but I really like it.

Always Kinky: Straight to the Beach?

AAAAAHHHHH! Relaxation!
I will be heading south to Daytona for my annual Homecoming Festivities this coming weekend. Many days of seafood, parties and my most favorite of all....the beach. First I hope the weather is LOVELY so that I can enjoy the waves. Secondly, what am I gonna do with these lovely tresses? Currently I am rockin the "Ceramic Treatment" also known as, flat ironed 'do. Soooooooo? I will arrive in Daytona and check the weather, if it is chilly then I will rock the hair as is. If it is HOT :-) then in the water I go!  I will pack in preparation for all hair emergencies but if all else fails I will have my Herbal Essence "Hello Hydration" conditioner and my twist out.. I love having all of these options sitting at my finger tips..

Always Kinky: Fail

I was CLUELESS! It has been many moons since I have had a bad hair day. Let me explain to you my idea of good hair, any style that allows me to put on makeup and leave the house without looking twice at the mirror. So please imagine my dismay when I glanced in the mirror at work... *gasps*. No wonder peoples eyes lingered a little more at the top of my head (this is very difficult because I stand 6 feet tall when I dont have on my 3 inches or more heels). Kinks and Naps have never been my enemy. I have walked out of a building with long tresses hitting below my shoulder through the rain. By the time I got to my car, the hair hit my ears....No sweat! I keep bobby pins in my car so keep it moving.

This day was a bit different. The night before, I decided to do a dry twist out. When the hair is dry it will be bigger than if it is wet. This look works wonders.....as long as there is not rain on the horizon. My hair turned out to be half dry and half kinky! in the wrong places. I guess I should check the mirror more than once a day?

Welcome to Always Kinky

Hello all! This blog will be about my hair chronicles. If you know me from youtube you know I have a vlog of hair stories. I have recently taken out my locs and I am learning my kinks all over again. With that being said I have become a product junkie! This blog will be a mixture of things but most of all journaling me an all of my different creations with my natural tresses (be them straight or kinky). Stay tuned!
